Draining the money from politicians ears

It would appear that the government is ready to listen to the cries of the poor at last! Finally politicians are bothering to hear the fact that the gap between the poor and the rich is widening (they've been too busy with their million dollar houses in the past). According to an extensive study by the Catholic Church, 7 years of Kennet rule has seen several areas in Victoria in danger of becoming 'problem areas' in terms of poverty (imagine that). Newcastle and Sydney were also included in this list. Apparently, and how long did it take them to come up with this, Australia is in danger of turning over the same ghetto problem that the US has today. Is it just me, or has this been apparent to anyone else for some time? Why is it that money tends to cause wax build up in the inner ear? Maybe it's just that people are willing to hear about the poor now that they can squash them with their money bags; identifying the problems and dealing with them, so to speak. OR maybe the govt only wants to hear about them now that they will be raking in more money than they can spend after July 1st 2000 (the irony of that date is too weird to be natural). Either way there isn't going to be any major change, if parliament history is any indication.
