It's true, PETA has gone overboard

I try not to buy products tested on animals, but I eat some meat. To the point, PETA is actually calling for a boycott of The Nature Conservancy (a disclosure: my uncle works for TNC), alleging that the snaring of feral pigs in Hawaii is unneccesarily cruel. Maybe it is, maybe it is not. But a boycott of the Nature Conservancy is the worst thing that could happen to animals, at least in the long run. If PETA stands against habitat destruction, I haven't heard about it, and it's not on their website.

This is not the only time animal rights interests have conflicted with conservation. In Massachussetts, leg-hold traps were outlawed. I agreed with that, until I saw an article in Audobon. In protecting individual animals, we often screw up our ecosystems, doing no favors over all. Instead of animals suffering at our hands, they suffer naturally. That's often a hell of a lot worse than what we do.
