Forget it. You will find that, however you state your points, that they and you will be attacked without more than a cursory reference to them. Along the way, all sorts of baloney will be slipped in (as in the Temperence Movement being primarily motivated by a desire to 'supress the working class', and not on the strange correlation between drunkeness and, for example, wife-beating). Thus, I have a suggestion. Rather than assume that those who you discuss these issues with have an honest interest in the truth of the matter, simply accept that most have a political agenda to press forth. Simply express what you see as the facts of the matter, express your honest opinion, and have done with it. If others continue to bring spurious and derogatory issues to the table, politely make note of the interruption, and carry on. If it continues, conclude your discussion with a defining declaration that sums up your opinion, and have done with further correspondence on that topic.

Until such a stance is taken to this barrage of innuendo and erratic grandstanding rhetoric, I'm afraid it will continue unabated. Worse, your passive acceptance of such tactics renders a legitimacy to what otherwise would be ludicrous arguments. What your beliefs are is deserving of the same consideration as those of everyone else; if others refuse to accept that, you need only point out that fact, and move on.

As to my stance on this particular issue, my own 'discussion' with a certain (Ms?)Karen I think would be enough for at least a general understanding.
