While I was working, once, I happened to say "crap" to a fellow employee within earshot of a woman with her child in a stroller. She made a point of shushing me and gesturing to her baby, as if to tell me that it was inappropriate to be using such language around the child.Two things about this struck me as ridiculous, and the first should already be apparent. "Crap" is a very benign word. Certainly stronger than "poo poo" but to me not nearly so vulgar as "excrement." Secondly, the child to which she pointed was an infant only several months old. And it was asleep. Provided it was awake it wouldn't have understood the word, as it's not as if it yet had the capacity for speech to repeat it!
Anyhow the look I gave her didn't seem to impress her any and she left in a huff. I pity the kid though. With parent's like that to keep him naive, it's a hard life he's just entered into.
