You're mostly right, and Stuart's whole argument is ridiculous. But viruses, like the cold virus, are not necessarily alive- biologists are still divided on the issue. Although they do reproduce, like living things, they don't metabolize, have no organelles, and can survive indefinitely in suspended animation. Hence it is not clear if they are alive or a sort of transitional form between life and nonlife.
