Vegetarians - Cruelty to vegetables

I guess the basic reasoning of vegetarians is that it is cruel to kill animals (who have a zest for life) to eat them. What about vegetables? Do they not have a zest for life too? What gives us the right to kill them? They are living things aren't they?
I'm not a vegetarian, but I was watching a show where they were catching mussels (shellfish) to eat, and I felt a bit sorry for the poor mussels who had a zest for life and were going to get eaten. But my reasoning is that everyone needs to eat, so it must be alright to kill animals and vegetables. Consider the wild cats (cheetahs, lions, leopards, jaguars, etc), they all eat meat and hunt for it. If it weren't for the supermarkets and butchers who sell meat to us, I'd be a vegetarian, I wouldn't kill an animal myself, but I'll let someone else do it for me. I'm such a hypocrite!
