: Zoos are not a solution to any of the world's problems; they are pure exploitation, and serve no purpose for individual animals or for species. Give your money and support to a cause which has respect for nature as its primary goal.

I'm not trying to dispute what you just said, but what about the large zoos that don't keep thier animals in cages? I went to the Bronx Zoo last year, and all the big animals there were living in these huge fields that resemble thier natural habitat. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the animals in places like that were happy since they are not really caged.
Although I am not a vegetarian, and I do feel there is nothing wrong with eating meat, I refuse to go to any circus after I heard about (and read about) how animals in circuses are treated. I heard that they are beat and tortured and "trained" to perform tricks on a daily basis. I remember back when I was about 10 or 12 these circus people brought a bunch of elephants to Long Island at some fair and I remember walking down the street next to this empty lot where about 5 or 6 elephants were chained and shackled to the ground, and there wasn't much room for them to move, and when I look back on that it really is sad, that these elephants were taken from the wild and then chained up and beaten. It wasn't like the animals at the Bronx Zoo that live free and are happy, these animals were shackled to the ground! And it wasn't like the cows that live happy and and one day are killed for us to eat, but these elephants are beaten and tortured daily, so I've read.
I don't know if what I read about circuses is true so maybe someone here can shed some light on the subject.
