:Someone made anti-Catholic remarks of teh kind that are all too commonly accepted in America, and he responded to them.

If they are all to common maybe more people should be responding to them. I'd heard in the past a lot about how the "American Way", as in truth justice and the American Way, was a concoction of protestant economic ethics and religious mores in the past but I had know Idea these sort of things had permeated American society to such an extent.

:He's not rtying to prove that any religion is exclusively correct, while other people are trying to argue that Catholicism is an inferior religion.

Might I say again against defamination and injustice regardless of the author or the victim.

: McSpotlight: When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter in the end who started it, it takes two to war.

This is true but I'd prefer war to unchallenged offensive, would you not?

: And when it comes down to it, both parties are advised by their holy book to respond to slights by "turning the other cheek"; something that would probably defuse this debate;

Turning the other cheek, in my opinion, doesnt involve ignoring the slap, Ghandi said I'm non-violent but I'm not passive about anything.

:I'm grateful to Lark for his reasoned and calm tone in the last few messages, but I cannot show any bias here or the debate is tainted;

Again I apologise if any if my posts seemed unreasonable or uncalm. If I could quote the great wise Gideon Hallat "you dont change peoples minds by breaking there heads".

:at least I'm an atheist, which makes things slightly easier.

Now this is the absolute worst thing society has become so intolerant that to maintain a semblance of objectivity and rationality one is required to remove one self entirely from the situation being debated.

McSpotlight: It's a bit of an artificial distancing in most cases; however, in this case, it enables me to say (with some justification) that I'm not secretly rooting for one side or the other.
