Day 273 - 03 Jul 96 - Page 10
certainly an implication that McDonald's and other
companies, but including McDonald's, were one of the
primary causes of deforestation in Central America for
cattle ranching.

Q. When did you, Mr. Gravett, can you remember, first conceive
the idea of rewriting or updating the fact sheet or doing a
new booklet?
A. It would have been sometime towards the end of 1989.

Q. Yes, and may I put to it you the reason for that was that
you realised, you knew by then, as did other members of the
group, that in large part the fact sheet was horribly
inaccurate?
A. No, no, not at all, not at all. No, I believed it was
accurate. It was just a question of bringing to light new
evidence against McDonald's. For instance, "Jungleburger",
and there are other examples as well.

Q. Then if you pass down to the next paragraph, which is the
fifth paragraph, it reads:

"We would like you to keep us informed of what your group
is doing against McDonald's and other fast-food outlets."

Why, Mr. Gravett, did London Greenpeace want to know what
other groups were doing against McDonald's?
A. Well, I wanted to know because we kept a file in the
office, letters, press cuttings from another organisations,
just to learn the extent of the campaign.

Q. But it says "we", Mr. Gravett, not "I"?
A. I know. Well, obviously, when I am going to write a
leaflet I am not going put "I" in it.

Q. Why not?
A. But, in fact, the most accurate way of phrasing this
would have been "the individuals within London Greenpeace
who took part in the anti-McDonald's campaign". Well, a
shorthand for that is simply "we".

Q. It has got at the bottom of it, it has not got Mr.
Gravett's name, it has not got the names of any
individuals?
A. No.

Q. It has got London Greenpeace, 5 Caledonian Road?
A. Yes, and I have never denied that McDonald's was one of
the campaigns of London Greenpeace, but, you know, it was
one of the campaigns and certain individuals took part in
it and others did not, and Ms. Steel and Mr. Morris did
not.

Q. No, Mr. Gravett, no. Can you just for the moment put
that -- and it may be the last time I want to refer to it
anyway -- put that pink file on one side and take the one
which has got the agent's notes in it, which is the royal
blue one?
A. Yes.
