Day 255 - 23 May 96 - Page 21

       A. I am not sure how far it got, or whether it went to
court, or whether they just published an apology, or
       whatever.

  Q. I think it might be one of the statements in open court?
       A. This is all a long time ago, I cannot remember.

  Q. The next one is in tab 15 from The Nuneaton and Bedford
Trader of 1989. Do you remember this one?
       A. I am sorry, I cannot remember this one either.

  Q. Do you see at the bottom it says:

"A spokesman for McDonald's said: 'It saddens us when they
do things like this. Their criticisms that we are involved
in deforestation is totally unfounded. We periodically get
those protests but they do not disrupt business'."

Would you agree with that statement?
       A. I do not know that they do not disrupt business. I do
not know who the spokesman was. Some of these protests
       have in fact disrupted business.

  Q. Tab 16, do you remember that one?
       A. No, well, hold on, I said "no" too quickly. No, I do
not think so. It is obviously a lift from your document
but no, I do not remember it.

  Q. Right. Tab 17, do you remember that one?
       A. No. It would very difficult for me to remember
individual polys. There was an awful lot of leafleting at
polytechnics and universities and colleges. I could never
say, "Yes, I remember this one" and "No, I remember that
       one".

  Q. Was it generally the policy at that time that everyone you
heard of you would write a letter to asking them to
       retract?
       A. If it contained material which we considered offensive
to us we would write to the college authorities.

  Q. Generally speaking, it would be to advise them that if they
did not retract and apologise ----
       A. -- Not necessarily.

  Q. You might take it further?
       A. No, not necessarily. We would just point out that we
felt it was offensive and that we would like our position
       known to the college authorities.

  Q. Tab 18, Chiltern Radio. Do you remember that one?
       A. Not in itself. I mean, there were lots of these.

  Q. You do not remember that one?
       A. No.

  Q. Tab 19 is The Bournemouth Advertiser. You were here for
the various evidence on that; were you not?
       A. Yes.
