Day 250 - 15 May 96 - Page 31

they just say what happened on a particular day?
       A. That is it.

  Q. What I want to know is whether they did refer to all the
       ----
       A. No, they did not.

  Q. And, secondly, in any event, whether you did any kind of
collation to work out how many were there. Can you help me
       on that?
       A. Yes, I can. The reports on occasions did refer to
agent 'A' or agent 'B' or agent 'C', but generally it was
just a report of what an agent had seen -- no
identification, no numbers, nothing. And then we got one
report from one agent, from one company, and later on
another occasion we get the report from the other company.
I really did not sit down at that time and say, right,
there were two agents on this night and this date, that was
       done later.

MR. MORRIS: So are you saying you got information about what
London Greenpeace were doing but you did not really know
the extent of the agents' activities?
       A. I got sufficient information, it was prepared by the
       director of the firm.

  Q. So the firm's directors only told you what they considered
would be sufficient to keep you happy as the client?
       A. No.

  Q. Paying the money?
       A. No, of course not.

  Q. They were not informed about large amounts of letters being
taken, that you have seen, you were not informed about the
influence that a number of agents might be having because
       of their numbers?
       A. No, because the directors of the company would know
how. They did not know about the other agency.

  Q. You never issued any instructions regarding the numbers of
agents that should attend or should not?
       A. No, I have been clear in my statement, I advised to
them they could use as many agents as they wanted to effect
the objective, to attain the objective. I left that
entirely to the directors of the companies.

MS. STEEL: Just check one final thing. You got information on
what was going on in the group?
       A. Yes.

  Q. But you did not get information about whether or not the
individual incidents going on in the group were carried out
by other agents that were employed by you. For example, if
some leaflets were handed out at a meeting you did not get
information about whether or not that was another one of
your agents that were handing out leaflets?
       A. The majority of times the reports, when they are
talking about handing out leaflets, named people. You were
       all named.
