Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 25
almost certainly identical to the ones that
London Greenpeace issued. The ones that I got from Canada
were, I believe, identical. The ones from Australia were
variations. They contained the cartoon, some of the text,
some of the 'Mc', the golden arch and the McGarbage,
McProfits. By then I had received many, many and, of
course, from all round this country.

Q. Right. You gave all those to the solicitors did you?
A. Eventually.

Q. So, they should all be in the publication bundles that have
been disclosed?
A. Well, if they were all retained, yes. I know a lot...
Some were sent over to different countries. They made
inquiries, 'what is this leaflet all about', and we sent
them out. We sent some to the Head Office at Oakbrook, but
the majority would end up with solicitors.

Q. Just going back to the 1987 picket, do you remember this
clearly?
A. Yes.

Q. Were there people... Can you describe what leaflets people
were handing out, how many were handed out?
A. There was two, maybe three people -- or drifting from 2
to 3 -- outside the Head Office. There was always one
outside the underground station and there was one across
the road in the vicinity of Augustus Barnet, which is one
of the shops opposite. This was the leaflet that was being
handed out, the one complained of, of which I obtained
one. But, to me, the picket was a damp squib. I arranged
for police coverage of an inspector, sergeant and 6 police
constables and after about 15 minutes of the demonstration
starting, which was about quarter past 4, the inspector
reduced it to 2 PCs.

Q. Did there appear to be any reason why the picket was so
small, or a damp squib, or whatever you want to call it?
A. I do not know.

Q. You could not see any apparent reason?
A. No, it just... I had been in the public order
department and attended literally hundreds of
demonstrations and pickets, and by any standard this was a
very small affair. Bearing in mind that I had nothing on
which to work before the demonstration took place, I did
not know what to expect.

Q. You have got that absolutely crystal clear in your mind
have you?
A. Yes, very much so.

Q. Followed the same plan as all the other years -- in the day
people handing out leaflets to people coming home from work
and leaving McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. What about?
A. What do you mean 'leaving McDonald's'?
