Day 198 - 08 Dec 95 - Page 20

  Q. Right.
       A. -- or on par with the Floor Manager rate, if I remember
       correctly.

  Q. About the McDonald's Freedom Fighters, you were asked about
that yesterday: The process of getting rid of the people
who were involved, was that done rapidly or was that over a
period of time with a number of discussions at different
       meetings or what?
       A. By that I mean it was weeks as opposed to days, if I
remember. It was not, sort of, like meeting today, or all
gone tomorrow. It would have happened over a period of
       weeks, if I remember correctly.

  Q. Right. Was there just the one meeting about that or was
       there more than that?
       A. I can only actually remember one meeting with more than
two or three people involved. There might have been
discussions on a one to one between other people about how
a certain thing was going to be done, but there was only
one main meeting, as I remember.

  Q. Right. Yesterday there were a number of references to
parts of your performance reviews where Mark Davis was said
to be telling you to hire more people. Did you want to
hire more people or were you, you know, deliberately trying
       to keep ------
       A. As I said yesterday, it was always a never ending
cycle. In times of high business, you did not have enough
an then when it was quiet you had too many, and coupled
with that that we tended to get a lot of students, people
involved with the Army because of where we were, we were
obviously always losing and gaining crew all the time. So
it was just an on-going -- it was something that through
the time I was a Manager was always there and as an
Assistant Manager, we were always hiring or losing crew.

  Q. Was it quite easy to hire people or?
       A. It became -- at one stage it was fairly easy but then
it became very difficult towards the mid 80s. We went
through a period when it was very, very difficult to get
       enough people in.

  Q. Do you know why that was?
       A. It was just there was -- there did not seem to be that
many people on the market to actually go for, where before
there was people looking for work. So we tended then to be
looking at part-timers. A reference was made to the Army
wife because the husbands were away so they had free time
on their hands, school leavers and that type of thing.

The type of people that tended to want to work were always
the younger people anyway. Older people either did not
feel that the wages were high enough or would not actually
take the discipline and the way they were expected to
work. So, it was really -- you were looking for that
younger market which everyone was trying to capture at the
same time and other companies were possibly paying better
       rates and had better conditions.
