Day 189 - 20 Nov 95 - Page 14

people who worked on what they called the front of the
house -- and this is the restaurant and the till area that
actually served the customers -- that the people who take
in the most money in their till get a bonus at the end of
the week. I know, actually, one case where one of the
workers refused it on the basis that this was a dreadful
way to try and divide and motivate the workers.

  Q. She refused to accept the bonus?
       A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I will just see if there is anything further. I do
not think there is. No further questions from us. Thank
       you.

                   Cross-examined by MR. RAMPTON Q.C.

MR. RAMPTON: A couple of questions. Do you have a copy of your
written statement -- I do not mean the handwritten one,
which I have not seen -- the typewritten one which you made
       on 20th July?
       A. On 20th July -- yes, I do.

  Q. It would be easier for both of us if you put it in front,
so that you can see it. Do you see the bottom of the page
where you say in the last paragraph: "When the strike was
finally over, September 1979, with the employees who joined
the union succeeding in having the right to have the ITGWU
act on their behalf, management refused to give me my job
back. The reason they offered was that the position
I worked in no longer existed."

       Have you got that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are you intending to suggest there that the reason they
       gave was a false reason?
       A. Subsequent occurrences in the store would suggest that
there was an ulterior motive for the reason. They now
       employ lobby hostesses.

  Q. Yes, but that was not until about two years later, was it,
       that they re-employed -----
       A. I have no idea when they started.

  Q. Do you remember a lady called Fiona Ni Chleiregh, who was
the lobby hostess at O'Connell Street?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. You do not remember?
       A. No. But I do know that, in terms of my work that was
carried out there, that it was an extremely busy area.
McDonald's handled a large amount of birthday parties, and
I was also in charge of complete personal relations with
the customers. What I am trying to get at is, it was a
busy position; so, in terms of them doing away with it, it
does not seem justified, from my point of view.

  Q. When the strike was over, you were offered a job at
