Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 08
MR. MORRIS: If any of the copies are hard to read, Anne has
brought the originals.

(To the witness): If we can just go through those and just
say what they are?
A. Right.

Q. The first pages up to there, can you just explain?
A. Pages 1 to 3 are notes where I would stand in the store
and watch just the process of what is happening. So those
are my notes that I made during -----

Q. From observations?
A. From observation before the filming actually started.

Q. Right. Let me just go a bit back a little bit. In this
six months working as a researcher, can you just explain
the different periods of work that you did actually in the
store?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would it not be better, as you have embarked
on finding out what the 19 pages are, if you completed that
and then ask questions? I have put "notes of observations
as I stand in the store".

MR. MORRIS: For the first three pages.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had better make sure which store it is.

THE WITNESS: Pages 1, 2 and 3 refer to both stores, Croydon and
the Strand.

MR. MORRIS: Are these notes verbatim on one day, or are
these -----
A. These are notes gathered together when I was trying to
convey to the producer the various visual elements that it
would be possible to film at the store. So these are
specifically concentrating on the visual elements,
pages 1 to 3.

Q. Then Croydon?
A. So, page 4 is very specifically about identifying the
people that we were likely to be filming and who they were
and what their rates of pay were.

Q. That is at Croydon?
A. Yes, page 4 is specifically Croydon, although the stars
refer generally to McDonald's. Page 5 is specifically the
Strand; and that was, I sat in and watched Michael doing
interviews with people coming for interviews for jobs at
the Strand store; that is page 5 and 6. That was
pre-filming. Pages 7 -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Pause a moment.
A. Sorry. (Pause) Pages 7 to 12 is a night that I spent
in the Strand, going through from when the Strand shut to
its customers and through the whole process of the night
close and opening up the next morning; that was one night
at the Strand prior to filming.
