Day 154 - 13 Jul 95 - Page 17

       ever seen it before?
       A. I probably have.

  Q. It has not got a front cover on it, has it?
       A. It looks as if it could well be the crew training
programme that was in operation at the time.

  Q. At the bottom of page 412 there is "Food Policy". It
says: "When you have a break you may take a meal of your
choice in accordance with the allowance operating in the
store, which is", then there is a gap, and then it says:
"You must record your meals", and explains how?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Free food and beverages are only for employee consumption
in the premises in the designated area"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that just the crew room?
       A. Generally, if they went on a break, they would take the
food up to the crew room. However, we would allow people
to take drinks during a shift, in which case that would be
out of the sort of kitchen area at the back.

  Q. It says here: "They cannot be consumed in the kitchen
       area"?
       A. By "kitchen area", that is kitchen area as in where you
put the food. There is a back room and a desk area and
that in most stores where you can go and have a drink. The
idea is not to have crew drinking in full view of the
       customers, for obvious hygiene reasons.

  Q. "Receiving, giving away or taking food without obtaining
full payment or without the appropriate authority is a
dismissable offence." That is the position if the crew did
not record the meals they had taken that they were entitled
to, as well, is it not
       A. If they forget to record it, that would possibly be
conceived as a mistake rather than a dismissable or
       disciplinary offence.

  Q. What was the meal allowance in the Colchester store while
       you were manager?
       A. I cannot remember exactly. It would have been so much
per hour; for instance, 45p an hour, for example. That is
not an exact recollection, but something like that.

  Q. Something around that amount?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And crew could not take more than their allowance?
       A. They were not supposed to take more than their
       allowance.

  Q. I have finished with that bundle. You have said that there
was no pressure put upon crew to smile. That is not true,
       is it?
       A. Crew were encouraged to smile. I would not describe it
       as "pressure".
