Day 153 - 12 Jul 95 - Page 11

cash tin, yes? Every time we took money out of the petty
cash tin, we would make up a voucher. In this case, it
would be the taxi invoice. So you would attach a petty
cash voucher to the invoice, write on the petty cash
voucher the date, write "taxis", the amount, write
"transfer"; that would go back in the petty cash tin.

On a weekly basis, as well, we used to make up the petty
cash onto a petty cash claim form. You would then itemise
each of the items, whether it be photocopying, buying pens,
or whatever -- whatever was constituted petty cash --
taxis, the amount; and that was totalled down. There was a
total amount for the petty cash at the bottom of the claim
       form.

  Q. Each week?
       A. Each week.

  Q. Which would go to Head Office?
       A. That would go to Head Office, who would then add each
item of the petty cash through onto the accounts.

  Q. When you say "travel", was that the general heading of an
       item of petty cash?
       A. Yes. Under "travel" also used to go a manager's car or
any travel for quarters, and that sort of stuff that was
done in the store at that time.

  Q. Managers would also make use of the taxis?
       A. Salaried managers were not supposed to use taxis.

  Q. Because?
       A. Because it was not part of their conditions of
       employment.

  Q. Unless they were working late or something?
       A. They were not supposed to use them, even if they were
       working late.

  Q. They had to walk home?
       A. What, salaried managers?

  Q. Yes.
       A. They would walk home or drive home or pay for the taxi
themselves -- salaried managers, yes. It is part of their
terms and conditions of employment for a salaried manager.

  Q. But part of the travel account would be some travel costs
       for salaried -----
       A. Oh, yes. If it involved not the normal day-to-day
going into the restaurants or, say, they have to go to
Birmingham or London for a course, obviously, they would
claim back their travel for that, whether it be train or a
       petrol amount.

  Q. Could they, in that case, use a taxi if they had to do
       something special?
       A. Well, you would not really want them to take a taxi to
       London.
