Day 131 - 06 Jun 95 - Page 27

  Q. -- you will see a document called Management of
Occupational Health and Safety in McDonald's Restaurants
       Limited?
       A. Yes.

  Q. A report by the Accident Prevention Advisory Unit of the
       Health and Safety Executive?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Dated August 1992. Were you in any way involved in the
making of this report or the invitation to the HSE to come
       and make it?
       A. No, I was not.

  Q. You were not?
       A. No. I was aware of it.

  Q. Have you read it?
       A. Yes, I have -- some while back, I have to say.

  Q. You will have noted, even if you cannot remember now, that
       it makes 23 different recommendations?
       A. Yes, indeed.

  Q. You would have heard from Mrs. Barnes -- in fact, you did,
because I know you came into court last week or the week
before, when she was giving evidence?
       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. -- that McDonald's implemented all 23 of those
       recommendations within 18 months?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Two questions, from your point of view: first of all, does
the fact that McDonald's implemented those recommendations
and accepted without qualification the report as being fair
and balanced, suggest to your expert mind and your previous
experience at McDonald's that the place was a shambles
       before this report came out?
       A. No, indeed not.

  Q. How much of a look did you get at McDonald's before the end
of 1991 and beginning of 1992?
       A. I had been in a fair number of units and I had spent a
lot of time talking with Jill about procedures, and so on
and so forth, which started the ball rolling, in other
       words.

  Q. What did you make of the state of affairs at McDonald's, so
far as health and safety was concerned, in what for you
were the early days of your relationship?
       A. That they are a concerned organisation, but there were
aspects which needed formalising. That is the sort of
thing Jill has been doing. In other words, people would
conduct an inspection, perhaps, but there may not be a
written record of it in the sort of detail that they are
now doing. So it was always on the agenda, but certainly
it has been given extra points since.

  Q. Generally speaking, what is your sense or feeling about
