Q. But when they do you claw back -----
A. We do not claw back. We do not pay overtime.

Q. They lose the differential for unsocial hours and the extra
for their good performance?
A. No, they do not. They are paid ahead of the minimum.
They do not.

Q. So you think that the system is fair, is it?
A. Yes, I believe performance related pay is extremely
fair and to be encouraged.

Q. You think it is fair that when they work overtime they do
not get that extra performance related pay ---
A. As I have said before --

Q. -- because it is taken up with overtime?
A. -- we would prefer them not to work overtime.

Q. Are 16 and 17 year-old employees a valuable part of what
you would call the "McDonald's team"?
A. Everybody is a valuable part of the McDonald's team.

Q. Do they work hard?
A. Yes.

Q. As hard as the other employees?
A. Yes.

Q. Why do you pay them less money than older employees then?
A. It is traditional in the industry.

Q. It may be traditional but that does not mean that you have
to do it, does it?
A. It does not mean we have to; it does not mean we have
not to.

Q. You said you believe in performance related pay?
A. Yes.

Q. If 16 and 17 years olds do the same work -----
A. They have the same performance reviews.

Q. But they do not have the same wages?
A. They do not have the same basic minimum wage in certain
parts of the country. That has always been accepted by the
Wages Council which was made up of an equal number of
employee representatives, employer representatives, under
an independent chairman. We accepted it and we continue to
pay it.

Q. The Wages Council do not say to you: "Hey, you cannot pay
above these rates for 16 and 17 year-olds", do they?
A. No.

Q. So you are choosing to pay the 16 and 17 year-olds less
than those that are over 18?
A. If it is appropriate to the region, that is right.
