which brings McDonald's good name or bad name into question
-----
A. Then we would speak to them about it, but it is their
responsibility.

Q. They are part of the McDonald's system?
A. Of course they are.

Q. That is what we are concerned about in this case, is it
not?
A. Yes, yes.

MS. STEEL: Pantry Franchise would not be allowed to run Burger
Kings as well, at the same time as running McDonald's,
would they?
A. No.

Q. They have to be exclusively McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. When they do something that you are proud of, you want to
take the credit and claim them as part of the McDonald's
family?
A. They are part of the McDonald's family.

MR. MORRIS: So part of the McDonald's family, or possibly even
McDonald's Restaurants Limited UK, because we do not know
the exact date, had been found guilty of sacking members
for union activity?
A. McDonald's UK were not.

Q. In Ireland in 1985?
A. I repeat, McDonald's UK were not.

Q. What did you do about it at the time, or what did you do
about it when you took over?
A. Nothing, the first -- I have a hazy recollection of
this, of being advised of this once the matter had been
resolved. On my next trip to Ireland I spoke to Michael
Makin. I was reasonably satisfied with the action they
took.

Q. What action did they take?
A. They sacked them.

Q. You were you happy they were sacked for joining a trade
union?
A. No, I did not. It was not contended by them they did,
and I was satisfied with the explanation they gave me.

Q. What explanation did they give you?
A. I forget now, but it was not union activity.

Q. So, suddenly you start remembering the case now, do you?
A. Vaguely.

Q. When Rights Commissioners, or the equivalent bodies in
other countries, make rulings against the Company, you can
take it or leave it, can you?
A. That would depend what the rulings are.
