Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 05
time on franchising than I did on personnel. Then
eventually I got security back again.

Q. Yes?
A. I lost it for a while. I did not have anything to do
with security for about 18 months.

Q. What time was that?
A. Well, when I became the personnel manager, late 1984,
we appointed a new security manager who at that time was
answerable to another Vice President. I was not then a
Vice President. When I became Vice President
-- when I was appointed Vice President in 1987 I took on
again the responsibility for the Security Department, so
I was a Vice President; I had three departments.

Q. So who was Head of Security?
A. Who took over from me?

Q. That briefly took over from you for 18 months?
A. Terry Carr. He is still the Security Manager, but
I was not from 1991 the Vice President -- every department
reports to a Vice President. I was the Vice President he
reported to from 1987.

Q. So for some period you were both Head of Security and Head
of Personnel?
A. From 1987 to 1991.

Q. When you would make security visits to stores, did you ever
take people in your department with you or other security
managers?
A. Yes, I did. I often did a tour with one of the area
Security Managers. They knew the stores better than
I did. So in the early days I used to tour a lot with the
area Security Managers. My knowledge of the Manchester
region was fairly small; the Midlands region I did not know
at all. So when I went to those regions I would, it would
be a five to eight-day visit, and I would tour stores with
them.

Q. So the London and south-east area you knew pretty well?
A. I knew the London area extremely well, but not so well
acquainted with the southern counties.

Q. If you made an official visit, official security visit,
would you take someone from your department -- you said a
Regional Manager, Security Manager?
A. Not every time. I often made visits on my own.

Q. You said that one of your jobs as Head of Personnel for
McDonald's UK was to recommend to Operations means of
improving working conditions in stores. Could you give a
list of the things which you recommended to Operations
regarding improving working conditions for staff in the
stores?
A. If I said "working conditions", I meant in the benefit
programme, improving their conditions of service in the
benefit programme. For instance, the book programme the
case programme, the life insurance, the private medical
