Day 117 - 27 Apr 95 - Page 12

Q. It does?
A. Yes, it does. It is very strictly monitored by
Supervisory Operational staff and the Field Personnel
Officers.

Q. Have you from time to time in your position, as Head of
Personnel, had complaints that people were not getting
their performance reviews as they should do?
A. I do not think I have ever received a complaint that
someone has not received a review, but I have received
reports from Field Personnel Officers that they have found
restaurants who have been slow in carrying out those
performances.

Q. What do you do about that?
A. I speak quite severely to the Restaurant Manager.

Q. Then it says how increases work: "McDonald's pays for
total performance. We reward our best employees with the
highest pay increases". "Outstanding", which scores 93.5
to 100. Are these percentages?
A. Yes. These are the marks that have been awarded by the
reporting manager.

Q. They can get an increase of 15p; "excellent" -- I will not
read the percentage -- can get an increase of 10p; "good"
can get one of 5p. These are increases in the hourly rate,
I take it?
A. These are increases in the hourly rate.

Q. "Needs improvement" does not get anything; "unsatisfactory"
may not only not get anything but may be disciplined as
well?
A. Yes.

Q. Then it says: "You can tell just how you are doing at each
performance review which is based on your job performance,
attitude, dependability, appearance and awareness. Merit
increases, managers and personnel more senior to them have
the right to award merit increases over and above the
performance review system for outstanding work or effort".

Does that mean that the manager can say: "Well, you have
done frightfully well" to a crew member, "not only can you
have your 15p, you can have something on top of that"?
A. Absolutely.

Q. It does mean that?
A. Yes, it does.

Q. Is that the same as or different from the bonus payments
which the manager makes?
A. No, that is different. That stops with him
permanently.

Q. Is it your experience that this incentive system, if I can
call it that, works in practice?
A. Absolutely definitely.
