with what one might call "man management" within the force?
       A. Essential, especially after attaining the rank of
Sergeant, and the higher you go the more responsibility you
       have.

  Q. Do any of the police forces have or had in the past a
       separate personnel department, human resources?
       A. There is a Personnel Department within the Metropolitan

       as that.

  Q. How long has that been in existence?
       A. Oh, for as long as I know.

  Q. In your day-to-day work as a senior policeman, do you or
did you have to deal with what one might call personnel
       matters?
       A. Yes, indeed.

  Q. To what extent, if any, was your experience in the Police
Force of use to you when you became at McDonald's Head of
       Personnel?
       A. In some matters it was extremely helpful; welfare
       particularly.

  Q. In what?
       A. Welfare particularly.

  Q. When you first became Head of Personnel at McDonald's in
this country, how many people were there in your
       department?
       A. I had one deputy in London plus one field personnel
officer. I had one field personnel officer in Birmingham
and one field personnel officer in Manchester.

  Q. So one field personnel officer for each region?
       A. Yes, with a deputy and myself.

  Q. So that is five of you, is it?
       A. Five of us.

  Q. Covering the whole country?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you remember, I am afraid I cannot -- we can look if up
if we need to -- roughly how many restaurants there were in
       1984?
       A. We opened our 100th in January 1983. We opened about
34 each year at that time. So, there would be roughly 160,
       170 restaurants.

  Q. What month of the year was it that you were appointed as
the Chief of Personnel for McDonald's in this country?
       A. I believe it was August -- no, October.

  Q. October?
       A. I believe it was October 1984.

  Q. When did you stop that job and become Ombudsman?
