Day 064 - 08 Dec 94 - Page 39
per cent Canadian beef. In Europe, we use 100 per cent
European Economic Community approved beef". Do you
remember before when we discussed this this morning we
talked about EC approved beef, so within that category any
imported beef that was approved by the EC under the quota
system would be EC approved beef, would it not?
A. It would, yes.

Q. So it seems from that, does it not, that the policy in
terms of the corporation internationally is not that beef
has to be raised in Europe, but it has to be beef that is
approved so that would cover, in fact, the Brazilian
consignment?
A. If it was EC approved, yes.

Q. If you look on the fifth block down it says: "In all
countries, we use beef from cattle fed on corn and grass
(alfalfa). We don't buy beef from soy or soya-feed
cattle"?
A. Yes.

Q. So this policy, how come you have never seen this before
then, or you were not aware of that policy?
A. Well, I have never been made aware of this. As I said,
it is an environmental policy which would have been handled
by Mike Matthews. He has not made me aware of this.

Q. OK. Then we cannot go much further on that then. We will
leave that one.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Oakley, you have responsibility for the
Communications Department; is that right?
A. Since 1992, yes.

Q. You have responsibility for education packs and things like
that?
A. No. That responsibility passed to Communications
Department around three weeks ago only. Effectively, we do
not have responsibility until January of next year.

Q. Oh, so if Mr. Hawkes said that we need to ask you about
education budgets, he was wrong then, was he?
A. Yes, as it applies to this case, yes. He was probably
aware that the responsibility is about to be passed over to
Communications.

Q. So a month ago was that his responsibility?
A. No. It actually came under the Training Department.

Q. Training Department?
A. Yes.

Q. Who was responsible for that then?
A. At the time we are talking about would have been Bill
Tindale. Today it is John Abberton but he has only
recently taken over.

Q. So have you had any involvement at all in getting
McDonald's literature or anything like that into schools?
A. No, I have not.
