Day 061 - 05 Dec 94 - Page 23

  Q. So it was not a McDonald's initiative, was it?
       A. We picked up the initiative and then pushed for a 100
per cent recycling, but the original thought came from the
       supplier.

MS. STEEL: You have just said recycling, 100 per cent
recycling. Are you talking there about collecting the
trays and sending them for recycling?
       A. No.

  Q. So did you mean 100 per cent recycled?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right that was something that your supplier introduced,
       I think you said before.
       A. He suggested to us he could use recycled material if we
wanted him to, and we encouraged him to and pushed that to
       100 per cent.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, but you said in your evidence that since 1981
these are 100 per cent recycled?
       A. Yes, that is correct.

  Q. So?
       A. That was 12 years ago. That is the comment I was
       referring to.

  Q. Right -- sorry when did you start using paper two and four
       hole trays?
       A. When?

  Q. Yes.
       A. I cannot tell you exactly, but I think they have been
around ever since I have been involved in McDonald's; they
may not have been right at the beginning, it may have been
a year or so after that, but it was certainly right at the
       end of 1970, maybe 1980.

  Q. Apart from that, we have sort of moved on to Europe in
general. When you say: "All the environmental initiatives
prior to that time (over 12 years ago)", are you saying
there were a great number of environmental initiatives in
the 70s or were you saying in the 80s?
       A. No, I am saying in the early 80s.

  Q. In the early 80s, "were negotiated direct with suppliers"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you name some of these environmental initiatives?
       A. We certainly had our paper bag content I think started
out originally as around 25 per cent recycled material.
There was one initiative there. We had initiatives
certainly with our corrugated outer cases with McCane's,
I think, going back probably to 1979.

  Q. Sorry are you talking about European?
       A. No.

  Q. Because I am asking you about Europe. Am I getting it
       wrong?
