central theme, as opposed to multiple themes? There have
been times when we will show a reel of commercials and make
some comment on the production values of the commercials.

MR. MORRIS: Were you aware that in Australia there were
problems with getting customers to accept the core menu of
McDonald's there? Are you aware of that?
A. Not really. My recollection is that the Australian
marketplace is a good marketplace.

Q. So how far do you remember back? You have been with the
Corporation since 1972.
A. Right.

Q. How long have you been in the promotion department?
A. I have been in the Marketing department full time.
I do not work directly with each of the countries within
the context that you are talking about. That is Don
Dempsey's responsibility. The majority of that also
is-----

Q. Sorry. How long have you been attending the international
meetings?
A. I probably attended international meetings for the last
seven or eight years on a periodic basis. I do not attend
them all. As a matter of fact, unfortunately, I missed
this year's because of a conflict in schedule. But I would
say that I attend at least half of them.

Q. So has it ever been discussed at one of these international
marketing conferences, where you are sharing experiences,
the fact that in Australia there was a struggle to get
consumers to accept the core menu of McDonald's?
A. No. I personally do not remember that discussion.

Q. No. That is referred to in the book Behind the Arches, on
page 436:

"The Australian president attributes that change" -- that
is in terms of accepting the core menu -- "to the influence
McDonald's has on children, whose tastes are not yet biased
against the American menu."

You never heard that?
A. Where is that?

Q. Page 436, at the top. It is the first complete sentence.
It comes after a couple of paragraphs about----
A. No. From a personal point of view, this is the first
time that I am reading this.

Q. If you look at the bottom of page 437, who is Steve Barnes,
Chairman of McDonald's International?
A. Yes, he is.

Q. He is still, is he?
A. Excuse me?

Q. Is he still?
A. No, he is no longer with the company. I believe he is
