and what kind of experience you can receive at McDonald's.

Q. But, in general, you have rejected, have you not, as a
Corporation, the diversification and indigenous food
approach; is that correct?
A. Well, in general terms.

Q. In favour of promoting the core menu in every country?
A. In general terms. I am not familiar with what we do in
every country.

Q. No, but-----
A. But, in general terms, I am aware that there are some
products in some restaurants in some countries that are a
bit different than other products in other countries. But
I agree with you that, in general, McDonald's has a core
menu, or at least McDonald's stands for a particular menu,
and that is the menu that we will communicate in the
countries where we are, and the consumer at that point can
partake of it or not.

Q. So in those countries where there is not a tradition of
eating hamburgers or beef, for example, your department has
an important role to play? Obviously, your department has
an important role to play in every country, but there would
be a specific important role?
A. Again, it would not necessarily be my department, and
I cannot talk about any particular country, but if we start
in a country, we obviously want to communicate to that
country the menu that we have.

Q. You say you have visited the Japanese branch of McDonald's
eight to ten times; is that correct?
A. Yes.

Q. You know Den Fujita?
A. Yes. I visited the country, probably it was around the
late 1980s. I do not believe I have been there for about
four or five years, but I made some regular trips.

Q. At that time?
A. At that time, yes.

MR. MORRIS: If I can quote to you a section of that John Love
book, on page 428. I do not know if everyone wants to get
it or whether I can just quote it? Page 428. I think
those pages are actually available.

MR. RAMPTON: I did hand up, my Lord, I think yesterday, a copy
of some of the pages, including 428.

MR. MORRIS: (To the witness) If you look at halfway down 428,
before we get to the last paragraph, the last sentence
says: "'Japan was really the acid test,' Turner says."
Turner is the Chairman of McDonald's, is he?
A. He is the -- I believe his title is the Senior Chairman
now.

Q. How many chairmen do you have?
A. Well, we have a Senior Chairman, Mr. Turner, and then
