Day 025 - 16 Sep 94 - Page 16
Q. That original coloured document you have there. If you
look inside it the first page facing you on the right-hand
side is a letter to the McDonald's Family from Ed Rensi,
is it?
A. Yes.

Q. You see that it is dated December 1986?
A. Yes.

Q. Will you take it from me this is not a document, this
thing you have got there, the coloured document, that was
circulated to the public at large?
A. Accepting that, yes, sir.

Q. What it actually contains is each of the advertisements
which are going to be published in 1987. If you flick
through it, you can see they are all there.
A. I will accept your word for it.

Q. Using that document, if you turn over the first of the
advertisements should be the one headed "Balance".
A. Yes, sir.

Q. It is. It has on the left-hand side of the page a stack
of food from McDonald's, some milk, a hamburger of some
kind and some fries. You were asked about this page
yesterday. You criticised it -- again I hope I summarise
the effect of your evidence correctly -- on the ground
that it misled people into thinking they could have
balanced food at McDonald's; is that right?
A. Essentially, yes.

Q. You did not have your attention drawn -- you looked at the
first three paragraphs of text down to: "Variety in our
menu means you can balance what you order". But you did
not have your attention drawn to the next bit, did you?
Would you read it to yourself, please?
A. The fourth paragraph?

Q. Yes, "And make sure your McDonald's meal" -----
A. Yes, sir.

Q. Turn over the page, please, this is part of the same
advertisement headed: "More about your balanced diet and
McDonald's good food". See in the left-hand
column: "Before we talk about our good food let's see what
the U.S. Government has to say about balancing your
diet". Then under "Seven keys to building a good diet" it
sets out what, according to McDonald's, the US Departments
of Agriculture and Health and Human Services recommend in
relation to balance and moderation to a diet. Do you see
that?
A. Yes.

Q. Then comes: "Nutrition experts agree these seven steps
are the most important things you can do for your diet to
stay healthy. Whether you eat at McDonald's or not,
please observe them". Then it says: "Variety - one thing
everyone agrees on. A balanced diet includes foods from
each of four basic food groups each day. Just in case you
