Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 08

1 not necessarily come to a uniform opinion.

2 Q. It is something that will cause stress?
              A. Oh, yes, it is alarming, very alarming.
     3
         Q. I think, just to put a figure on it, I think it actually
4 works out at 17.5 thousand per day that will be receiving
              prestun shocks?
     5 A. I do not know.

6 Q. That is based on the total slaughtered at Sun Valley
poultry being 35 million chickens a year. At the time of
7 the visit you made in February, you said the electrode did
not span the length of the water bath, and this would lead
8 to an uneven current flow. Do you know what the range of
the current passing through individual birds would have
     9 been?
              A. No, it was not measured.
    10
         Q. It was not measured. Right. So the figure you gave
11 somewhere of approximately 60 milliamps per bird, you
would work that out by measuring the current in the water
12 bath, then dividing it by the number of birds in there or
              what?
13 A. This is back to K, is it, which are we on?

    14 Q. B.
              A. B, thank you.
    15
         Q. It is on the second page of that.
16 A. To the best of my memory, this was a figure provided
to me by the staff at Sun Valley. I did not measure
17 this. I did not make this particular measurement to the
              best of my memory.
    18
         Q. You gave a recommendation concerning this so, presumably,
19 this was a matter of some concern to you because an uneven
current flow might lead to some birds not being properly
    20 stunned?
              A. That is correct.
    21
         Q. Would it ----?
    22 A. Instantaneously.

23 Q. Right. And possibly some not stunned at all, although
while you were there you did not think you saw any?
24 A. That is true, the second part is true.

25 Q. What about the first part, some might not have been
              stunned?
26 A. At all. It is only those birds which passed over the
stun without making contact with the stunner, incomplete
27 immersion, which would have been observed to show
              conscious behaviour, which were observed.
    28
         Q. What about not stunned properly then?
29 A. It is instantaneously. That is a risk associated with
              a short metal electrode, yes.
    30
         Q. At this time there were male and female birds on the same
