Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 11
1 Q. I want to ask you to look at just one or two parts of this
document. I would like you to look at just one or two
2 parts of this document. I would like you to look at what
would be your fifth page, please?
3 A. Is that "More about your balanced diet"?
4 Q. It is just called "Balance". It has a picture of a
hamburger surmounted by a packet of milk. Do you have
5 that? We see "Balance" on the front?
A. Yes.
6
Q. I do not know whether I have the pages right. It is 102
7 in our files. I am not going to read it out. We read it
yesterday. Can you just read it to yourself, please?
8 A. Yes.
9 Q. OK. To you, as a specialist in nutrition, does the
statement of principle which appears there express
10 something important?
A. Well, I think, in particular, the phrase "no one food
11 provides all the necessary nutrients" is quite important,
fundamentally.
12
Q. What about the fourth paragraph: "And make sure your
13 McDonald's meal balances with other meals you eat". Is
that important?
14 A. Of course it is, yes.
15 Q. Can you turn on then, please, turn over the page, one sees
a good deal more about balance, but I will not ask you
16 about that. Then passed a picture of a milk bottle with a
potato on top of it. Do you have that?
17 A. Yes.
18 Q. Then pass the page after that until you come to an
illustration of a hand carrying some salt?
19 A. Yes.
20 Q. "Less than a pinch". Turn over that page. Again, I am
not going to read it out. I would like you to read the
21 first column on that page?
A. This is "More about salt"?
22
Q. Yes, "More about salt", including the table.
23 A. OK.
24 Q. Have you read that?
A. Yes.
25
Q. First of all, a general question. From your point of view
26 in this country, does this document, published in America
in 1987, seem to provide satisfactory information or not
27 about salt?
A. Well, I think I should explain that there is, at least
28 there has been, a difference in emphasis between the UK
and the US about the importance of reducing salt in the
29 diet.
30 Q. Which way does the difference go?
A. There has been greater emphasis in the United States
