Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 12
1 we were working on last week.
2 Q. Where does Costa Rica or McDonald's, Costa Rica, get its
paper wraps from?
3 A. When I was enquiring last week when I was there,
I came to learn, which I did not know previously, is that
4 there are no paper producers in Costa Rica.
5 Q. No paper producers?
A. No paper processors. They import it all from the
6 United States, so I was told.
7 Q. I want to go back a bit in time to the time when you were
probably still a student 1973/4, yes?
8 A. Yes.
9 Q. So this is a bit of history. Do you mind if I use you for
this little piece of history? McDonald's was at that time
10 using paper wraps?
A. Paper board.
11
Q. You said that already -- I have it wrong again -- paper
12 board for its hamburgers and other products?
A. For its Big Mac. We use paper wraps for the smaller
13 sandwiches, cheeseburgers and hamburgers. It was a
combination, so that is why you are correct in saying
14 "wraps".
15 Q. Let us say paper based products. It then changed shortly
after 1974, about 1975, to polystyrene foam or, at any
16 rate, some of them?
A. That is correct.
17
Q. What was the reason?
18 A. The reason we switched was that we felt we found a
better package from an overall perspective. So, for
19 instance, we commissioned a study by Stanford Research
Institute that in the end concluded that if they had to
20 give an advantage to polystyrene foam versus paper board,
they would lean towards polystyrene foam from an
21 environmental perspective.
22 We also knew that from the other parameters of our
business we thought it would be an improvement for our
23 operations, for the crew. We thought it would be an
improvement for our customers, to have better food for our
24 customers.
25 Q. What age were you in 1975?
A. Pardon me?
26
Q. What age were you in 1975?
27 A. I was born in 1956.
28 Q. So 19?
A. Yes.
29
Q. Still at university?
30 A. Yes.
