Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 11

Q. We noticed yesterday that there are two countries left in
2 the world, I think the Phillipines and Turkey, which to
some extent at least are still using HCFC-22 for their
3 polystyrene foam?
A. That is correct.
4
Q. Can you predict what is -- perhaps that is the wrong way
5 of putting it -- do you know what the future in those two
countries is, so far as the use of HCFC-22 is concerned?
6 A. What I do know is that the future, the immediate
future, is up in the air, indefinite. The reason for that
7 -- I was just in the Phillipines earlier this year;
I spoke to the country manager, George Yang, and since
8 I was out there on business, this is one of the issues
I brought up. The issue in the Phillipines has to do with
9 -- there is basically only one supplier in the
Phillipines. They cannot make a switch for various
10 reasons in their business. McDonald's is just a small
part of their business. There are severe import
11 restrictions in the Phillipines such that, as you know or
you might know, some of the countries we are operating are
12 under extreme pressure for certain products to use local
suppliers.
13
All these reasons combined have thus far made it difficult
14 to initiate the switch. The remaining suppliers do know
of our desire to phase out of 22 and are looking and had a
15 sense of urgency to find alternatives. We will make the
switch as soon as it is possible within those countries.
16
Q. Yes. One question which occurs to me and might occur to
17 others: We did notice the Phillipines also uses, to some
extent -- I do not know what extent -- paper wraps as
18 well. Do you remember that? I think that is right.
A. That is not my recollection. I think, my recollection
19 is they do use a combination of HCFCs 22 and hydrocarbons.
20 Q. Then that is my mistake. I apologise for misleading you
or trying to put words into your mouth which were wrong,
21 but we had better check it since I have raised it. You
are right. I am wrong.
22 A. I thought so because I ate a lot of McDonald's food
whilst I was in the Philippines. I could have sworn it
23 was polystyrene foam I was eating out of. I think the
issue there, the reason we use both hydrocarbons and
24 HCFC-22 is the difference between breakfast packaging and
sandwich packaging.
25
Q. The one I had in mind -- my fault entirely -- is Turkey
26 which seems to use a combination of paper and HCFC-22
blown polystyrene. Can you tell us about that, or do we
27 leave that to Mr. Oakley?
A. I do not know the particulars of Turkey.
28
Q. One other thing while I have this open which I meant to
29 ask you later on but I will ask you now: I noticed
Costa Rica and other places in that tropical zone of the
30 world uses paper wraps now. Did you know that?
A. Correct. I happened to be in Costa Rica on a project
