Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 07
1 obvious question: You are the director of environmental
affairs for a very large corporation?
2 A. Yes.
3 Q. Which produces -- we are not talking relative terms now --
a substantial, large, if you like, amount of waste by one
4 means or another, directly or indirectly?
A. Yes.
5
Q. Do you care about the environment -- you, personally?
6 A. I care tremendously about the environment.
7 Q. If you thought that McDonald's was helping to wreck this
planet on which we all live, would you continue to work
8 for them?
A. No, I would not. One of the pleasures of my job is to
9 make significant improvement within the environment and
see the results in our business, how we can directly
10 improve the environment we live in -- it is very
rewarding.
11
Q. You are fortunate that you are in a position to have some
12 control over that?
A. Yes, I feel very fortunate.
13
Q. Do you have children, Mr. Langert?
14 A. Yes. I have two girls, 11 and eight years old.
15 Q. Does it concern you what sort of condition this planet
should be in by the time they grow up?
16 A. It sure does.
17 Q. And their grand-children?
A. Absolutely.
18
Q. I want to go into a little more detail about the history
19 of the various matters with which we are concerned.
First, I want to ask you this: Is Mr. Kouchoukos right in
20 saying that McDonald's does not have any written contracts
with Perseco?
21 A. That is absolutely correct. I worked at Perseco
myself and had no knowledge of any contracts with anybody.
22
Q. How are the various detailed and general practices and
23 policies put into effect as between McDonald's and
Perseco? How are communications made between you?
24 A. Mostly via talking, communication. That would be the
majority of what we do, and sometimes things are put in
25 writing but that would be much less frequent, in terms of
just acknowledging that we agree to do this or that
26 relating to a certain issue.
27 Q. How far away from your office in Oak Brook is the Perseco
office?
28 A. Perseco is approximately two miles away.
29 Q. Can I go back and do a little bit of American history,
Mr. Langert? In the 1970s and previously, I assume,
30 McDonald's was using paper to wrap its what you called
sandwiches?
