Day 002 - 29 Jun 94 - Page 30
1 You see, for the paragraph under the one you are on, "The
power of the US dollar", he said if the implication is
2 that poor countries export meet to McDonald's, then that
is false.
3
MR. MORRIS: Our case is that they do not only use supplies,
4 not just beef or soya for cattle in the countries where
they are grown, they use -- beef is exported from country
5 to country and we have already heard today that they have
admitted that they have used Brazilian beef in this
6 country.
7 So, anyway, our general case will be that is generally
established. It does not only apply just to beef anyway;
8 it applies to anything, tomatoes, potatoes, whatever. It
is mainly a general point.
9
The third part, they have never used cattle grown on feed
10 stuff -- Mr. Rampton said they had never used cattle that
had been raised with feed stuff grown in a Third World
11 country, although it is my understanding that Argentina
may be a Third World country -- it is certainly a South
12 American country -- and the drift of his argument is that,
well, it proves our point really, that they are importing
13 not necessarily directly but they are responsible for that
kind of international trade to benefit their business. In
14 those countries where they operate, their business will
have an impact on those countries, such as to ensure that
15 self-sufficient farmers may be displaced. I mean, in all
these points we feel we have either the evidence to prove
16 or that we can show that McDonald's were reckless as to
the effects of their business on the social fabric of
17 those countries.
18 In point 4, he seems to think that we were making that the
McDonald's is indifferent to the -- sorry, I have numbered
19 the points as Mr. Rampton went through them, which is the
last sentence in that section above the photograph.
20 "McDonald's is directly involved in this economic
imperialism, which keeps most black people poor and hungry
21 while many whites grow fat". Our point would be that the
whole purpose of US imperialism, the effect of it, is to
22 create an imbalance of wealth between rich countries and
poor countries, as is established fair comment; most rich
23 countries are white and most poor countries are black.
24 The next section is the gross misuse of resources; again
that really goes into the soya claims. Our case is that
25 they have consumed soya in significant amounts. The
cattle bound for McDonald's have consumed soya in
26 significant amounts, and that has had an impact from where
the soya comes from. It is our case it comes from Brazil,
27 but if it comes from Argentina it still has an effect. It
is says South American countries mentioned in this
28 paragraph. Really that paragraph "Gross Misuse of
Resources" is talking about the way that food grains are
29 wasted by being consumed by cattle rather than being grown
for human consumption.
30
So, I do not think Mr. Rampton is making a big point about
