Burger bar blocked

The Guardian, Tuesday September 17th '96

PLANS to build a McDOnald's burger bar on the site of the local Conservative Party headquarters in Michael Portillo's Enfield constituency were rejected by council planners last night after council officers said the proposed restaurant would cause noise and traffic problems.

The proposal attracted national criticism after it was claimed McDonald's was prepared to pay £100,000 above the going rate for the building. Labour MPs claimed that this money might be used to fund the Conservative's election campaign - an allegation denied by Tory officals.
