Communities v. McDonald's

Posted by: Joseph DiSalle ( 49-50 Street Block Association, USA ) on May 20, 1996 at 13:31:23:

We, the members of the Clinton Community, a.k.a. "Hell's Kitchen"
New York City, are deeply troubled over a proposed McDonald's to be
placed in an area that is part of a special effort known as "Safe
Corridor." This "Safe Corridor" took years to achieve with citizens
working with local authorities to help guide safely and peaceably
students from two adjoining high schools to their homeward destinations
with no incidents of disruption or violence. Placing an attractive
nuisance such as McD's at this location will dangerously, immediately,
and irreparably set back these efforts and harm the well being of
the community.

We tried to speak with McDonald's before they signed the lease, but
they put us off and now they say they cannot back out of the lease.
We need help from all the other communities that have fought and won
or lost. We want to know what works, what doesn't and what's important
to do regardless.

"Hell's Kitchen" is more kitchen than hell. We have an incredible
unique atmosphere with a great variety of ethnic restaurants from
Afghan to Zen.

From what I could find at the public library scanning the newspaper
abstracts, there have been communities opposing McD's in:
Lake Forest, IL
Denver, CO
Jerusalem
Woods Hole/Falmouth, MA
South St. Louis County, MO
Boston's North End, MA
Bexley, OH
Port Washington, NY

Please help if you can. Thank You and God Bless You All.
